The word, medicine. What image is conjured up with the utterance of that word, medicine.  It is worthwhile to take note of that image and write it down, because it will tell you what your immediate perception of medicine is.
Even if you are a herbalist, traditional healer, Ayurvedic doctor or Chinese herbalist, the odds are, that your first perception of medicine is of some aspect of biomedicine, be it a doctor with a stethoscope, a hospital, x ray, or other image.

For many years now, I have worked as a medical herbalist (Western tradition) in a general practitioner, primary care, clinic in Ireland.  My approach to patient care has evolved to include the use of the therapeutic modalities present in Irish indigenous/folk medicine and culture and the prescribing of medicinal herbs alongside a biomedical understanding of diagnostics and pathology.
This work has shown me the importance of culture in  our perception of what medicine is, and how it affects  our approach to illness and its treatment.  But of course, what is culture? What are the hidden assumptions we carry through life and never question them because they are as much part of us as hethte air we breathe.
