Evening

In the Irish tradition, the day starts the night before and this makes perfect sense in the maintenance of our health. If preparations for the day are made the evening before, there is every chance that the day will run more smoothly and with less stress. Also by being prepared, there is a better chance of sleeping well and allowing our bodies to  rest and rejuvenate, ready for the work of the day.

For many years now, I have worked as a medical herbalist (Western tradition) in a general practitioner, primary care, clinic in Ireland.  My approach to patient care has evolved to include the use of the therapeutic modalities present in Irish indigenous/folk medicine and culture and the prescribing of medicinal herbs alongside a biomedical understanding of diagnostics and pathology.
This work has shown me the importance of culture in  our perception of what medicine is, and how it affects  our approach to illness and its treatment.  But of course, what is culture? What are the hidden assumptions we carry through life and never question them because they are as much part of us as hethte air we breathe.
