Evening

13/1/2021

In the Irish tradition, the day starts the night before and this makes perfect sense in the maintenance of our health. If preparations for the day are made the evening before, there is every chance that the day will run more smoothly and with less stress. Also by being prepared, there is a better chance of sleeping well and allowing our bodies to  rest and rejuvenate, ready for the work of the day.

A new moon

A new moon is imminent and brings with it the promise of growth and possibilities. I have already noticed the first shoots of plants peeping over the ground and I wonder when will I get the chance to do all the necessary pruning and tidying before the upsurge of growth.
Planning the month ahead  by following the moon is so much nicer than managing it in an app or diary. Observe each 7 days of the lunar path and set your schedule and tasks to that. Look at the  moon and note how many days are left to the next stage and appraise your work in that way.

lunar cycle

We are only a day or so from a new moon and this is a good opportunity to assess what we need to do during the next lunar cycle. A lunar cycle is 4 weeks and it is so easy to lay our our goals and aims for each week  and noticing the  progression by observing the movement of  the moon than a project sheet. Is the moon waxing? than I may need to plant some cabbages or peas. In the waning moon, some carrots or onions may be my choice.

Medicine?

The word, medicine. What image is conjured up with the utterance of that word, medicine.  It is worthwhile to take note of that image and write it down, because it will tell you what your immediate perception of medicine is.
Even if you are a herbalist, traditional healer, Ayurvedic doctor or Chinese herbalist, the odds are, that your first perception of medicine is of some aspect of biomedicine, be it a doctor with a stethoscope, a hospital, x ray, or other image.

The Calendar

It is December 31st and tomorrow is the start of a new year, 2021.
BUT, we forget that 2020 or 2021 or another numerical figure we put on the passing days are made by man. What if we did not have a  2021 calendar? How would we measure time? By the moon? by the sun?
The passage of the sun has been measured since time began and even today, the entry of the sun through the light box at Newgrange, Co. Meath, Ireland, on December 21st is a newsworthy occasion. This hereld of  a longer day and shorter day is a cause of celebration, hence we have Christmas.

For many years now, I have worked as a medical herbalist (Western tradition) in a general practitioner, primary care, clinic in Ireland.  My approach to patient care has evolved to include the use of the therapeutic modalities present in Irish indigenous/folk medicine and culture and the prescribing of medicinal herbs alongside a biomedical understanding of diagnostics and pathology.
This work has shown me the importance of culture in  our perception of what medicine is, and how it affects  our approach to illness and its treatment.  But of course, what is culture? What are the hidden assumptions we carry through life and never question them because they are as much part of us as hethte air we breathe.
